Oregon Provisional Government collection, 1841-1931 (bulk 1841-1859).

Collection created by the Oregon Historical Society of materials relating to the Provisional and Territorial governments of Oregon. Records include: bound volume containing hand written copies of Oregon laws, 1844; appointment of David Leslie as administrator of the Ewing Young estate, 1841 April 15; promissory note from Joseph Gale (1844 November 5); promissory notes from the Territorial Government to Asa Lovejoy (signed by John H. Couch, 1847 March 25), Francis W. Pettygrove (1848 May 25), and William Holmes (1848 January 7); general papers, 1844-1855; Washington County Probate Court petition for building a public road to Portland, 1850 May 7; hand written and typescript copies of acts, messages to the legislature, letters by John McLoughlin, and other papers, copied by George R. Schreiber and Esther L. Plumer in 1913 from originals (dated 1843-1849) formerly in the Oregon State Capitol; and various school compositions, pamphlets, and research notes relating to the history of the Oregon Territorial government.

Reverend David Leslie was born in Washington, New Hampshire in 1797. He left New York in 1837 and traveled to Oregon via Cape Horn, arriving in September 1837. In Oregon he served in Jason Lee's Willamette Methodist Episcopal mission, and in 1839 he was appointed as one of two magistrates of the country south of the Columbia River.
